Jamshedpur: Shiv Shankar Singh, a BJP member turned rebel after former Jharkhand Chief Minister and Odisha Governor Raghubar Das’s daughter-in-law, Purnima Sahu, received the party’s ticket to contest from Jamshedpur East, filed his nomination as an independent candidate on Wednesday, accompanied by thousands of supporters.
Thousands of supporters including both men and women carried placards showcasing slogans like “Nepotism Down Down” and “Parivarvad Murdabad” (Death to Family Politics).
The Jamshedpur East constituency is now expected to witness a triangular contest in the upcoming elections. Shiv Shankar Singh, who was hoping for a BJP ticket, decided to contest independently after being overlooked in favour of Purnima Sahu. He has vowed to fight for the respect of the common people and BJP workers.

As Shiv Shankar Singh’s nomination procession made its way through the city, massive crowds gathered on the streets in support. Men, women, and youth participated enthusiastically in the rally, chanting slogans against nepotism and in favor of Singh. The rally caused significant traffic disruption throughout the day, leading to a chaotic situation that kept the administration on its toes.
Singh’s day began with a padyatra (foot procession) from Old Cable Town, Golmuri, alongside his supporters, with a stop at the Bajrangbali Temple at Golmuri Chowk for prayers. He was greeted warmly by local community members who wished him success. He later visited Sakchi Gurudwara to seek blessings, where the Gurudwara management committee welcomed him and extended their best wishes for his victory. The rally also made a stop at the Manokamna Siddh Temple for prayers.
During a public gathering, Shiv Shankar Singh strongly criticized the growing influence of family politics in Indian political parties. He called on the public and BJP workers to join him in fighting against this practice. Following the rally, he filed his nomination papers at the East Singhbhum Election Office.
The last date for filing nominations is October 25, with scrutiny scheduled for October 28. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until October 30. Voting will take place on November 13, and counting will be held on November 23.
