Saryu Roy calls for White Paper on State Finances, criticizes shortened Budget Session

Jamshedpur, Feb 18:  Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy has urged Chief Minister Champai Soren to release a white paper detailing the state’s financial status. Roy emphasized that similar to when Hemant Soren assumed office, releasing a white paper would provide transparency regarding the financial condition inherited by the current government.

Speaking to the media at his residence in Bistupur on Sunday, Roy expressed concerns over the unexpectedly short duration of the forthcoming budget session, slated to commence on February 23. He highlighted that while previous budget sessions spanned several working days, the 2024 session was only scheduled for seven days.

Roy raised questions about the feasibility of adequately addressing budget demands within such a limited timespan, noting potential implications for departmental allocations. He stated that the government’s struggle to meet expenditure targets for existing schemes may have influenced the decision to curtail the session.

Roy speculated that political instability following the recent expansion of the Council of Ministers could have contributed to the shortened session, as each day of the session required votes on financial matters.

Asserting the importance of accountability, Roy vowed to seek answers on unresolved issues from previous sessions, particularly pertaining to allegations of corruption within certain government departments.

As the final budget session of the fifth assembly of Jharkhand approached, Roy called upon the Chief Minister to disclose the state’s financial status and address lingering concerns raised during his tenure.
