Ruckus erupts during Tata Workers Union Committee meeting over account discrepancies

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur:  Tension gripped the committee meeting of Tata Workers Union, the authorized union of Tata Steel, as members raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the accounts. The meeting, which saw spirited protests and heated exchanges, shed light on discrepancies that fueled discontent among attendees. Despite objections from committee members, Chairman Sanjeev Chaudhary Tunnu insisted on passing the accounts, sparking further dissent.

The meeting commenced under the leadership of union president Sanjeev Chaudhary Tunnu, with customary tributes paid to the deceased. However, tensions flared when Treasurer Amod Dubey presented the accounts, and committee member Omprakash Sharma alias Bambam, along with former Assistant Secretary Saroj Singh, unearthed significant discrepancies in the December 2023 account.

Sharma and Singh highlighted a glaring discrepancy related to the booking of rooms at the Puri Guest House, a facility managed by the union. Despite claims of full bookings, only one room was reportedly occupied throughout December, raising questions about the missing revenue. The union purportedly incurred expenses amounting to Rs 99,120, whereas only Rs 1,070 was generated from bookings, indicating a substantial loss.

In response to mounting concerns, President Tata Workers Union pledged to investigate the matter and rectify the accounts, urging members to pass them. However, Sharma and Singh remained steadfast, demanding accountability and recovery of the missing funds before approving the accounts.

Despite the adamant stance of these members, Chairman Tunnu unilaterally declared the accounts passed, much to the dismay of dissenting voices. The Speaker proposed the formation of a joint committee to address grievances, garnering approval from the House. Nonetheless, discontent simmered as members voiced skepticism over the efficacy of the committee.

Chairman Tunnu defended the union’s actions, asserting that any discrepancies would be addressed promptly. He reiterated that the contentious CBSE 2 agreement, signed in September 2019, would be scrutinized for its impact, assuring transparency and accountability in future dealings
