Rotary Club of Jamshedpur West drives social change with eco, rural & health initiatives

Jamshedpur: The Rotary Club of Jamshedpur West (RCJW) has been actively engaged in transformative social initiatives, addressing environmental conservation, rural development, and healthcare. Their recent projects in Ghoramara Island, Chimti Pahari, and the Mega Anemia Camp exemplify their commitment to community welfare and sustainable development.

Ghoramara, a small island in the Sundarbans with a population of 4,500, has suffered repeated cyclones, leading to the destruction of homes, schools, and agricultural land. In response, RCJW, with support from Tata Group, charitable foundations, and individual donors, planted 100,000 mangrove and fir trees along the shoreline to combat erosion. A newly constructed Cyclone Shelter now offers safety during extreme weather conditions.

This year, to revive agriculture on the island, RCJW introduced a soil conditioner, improving fertility and allowing farming to resume, alleviating poverty. Addressing women’s livelihood concerns, the club facilitated a weaving training program for 48 women, led by a PhD scholar in Textile Engineering. Weaving looms were installed in the shelter building and inaugurated by District Governor (DG) Bipin Chachan on March 15, 2025. Additionally, solar panels were installed to power a borewell pump and provide electricity for the shelter.

Chimti Pahari, a remote village near Bodam, is home to the nearly extinct Pahariya tribe. Lacking basic amenities such as roads, water, education, and healthcare, the community has long struggled in isolation. RCJW initiated a multi-dimensional poverty alleviation program, first providing clothing and then constructing check dams and borewells for irrigation and drinking water.

A school with mid-day meals was established, with six girls sent to a tribal residential school. Lift irrigation has enabled the first-ever vegetable cultivation in the village. Women have been trained in bamboo broom-making, generating income. A basic health clinic has also been set up, with a trained villager providing emergency medical care.

On March 22, 2025, RCJW, in collaboration with Srimad Rajchandra Hospital & Research Centre, Gujarat, launched a large-scale anemia diagnosis and treatment initiative, aiming to cover 100,000 people. Deputy Commissioner of East Singhbhum, Ananya Mittal, IAS, inaugurated the camp at Narbheram School, Bistupur.

The initiative, expected to continue for 6-12 months, will conduct anemia tests and provide necessary treatment. On the first day, 600 students underwent screening. Mittal emphasized the need for awareness and assured government support for the program.

The District RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) commenced with sessions at Kerala Public School, where eminent speakers, including past district governors and Tata Steel Foundation’s Saurav Roy, shared insights on leadership principles aligned with SDG goals. Participants visited a tribal village, interacted with locals, and engaged in cultural activities.

The South Asia Federation of Rotarian Golfers Tournament, held on January 25, 2025, raised funds for Chimti Pahari’s development. Featuring participants from across India and Asia, the event’s prize distribution ceremony was graced by renowned filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, spotlighting Rotary’s impact on rural progress.
