Former Tata Steel VP Rajiv Kumar appointed CEO of Vedanta Aluminium

New Delhi, March 27: Vedanta Ltd has appointed former Tata Steel Vice President Rajiv Kumar as the CEO of its aluminium business. The decision was approved by the company’s board during a meeting held on March 26, 2025.

Kumar, who resigned as Vice President – Operations at Tata Steel Kalinganagar on March 12, brings over three decades of experience in the steel and mining sectors. His appointment comes at a crucial time when Vedanta is in the process of demerging its businesses, including aluminium, into four independent entities.

“The board of directors, at its meeting on Wednesday, March 26, has approved the appointment of Rajiv Kumar as CEO – Aluminium Business and designated him as senior management personnel at Vedanta Ltd, effective immediately,” the company stated in a regulatory filing.

On the recommendation of the nomination and remuneration committee, Kumar has been appointed for a tenure of three years. He will lead the overall strategy for the aluminium business, focusing on an effective demerger approach to maximize value. Additionally, he will oversee the development of strategic alliances to fast-track business growth, as well as marketing and ESG initiatives.

Vedanta highlighted that Kumar will drive the adoption of advanced technologies, innovation, and digitalization to transform the business and enhance long-term value for shareholders and stakeholders.

A metallurgical engineer from BIT Sindri, Kumar also holds a General Management degree from Insead, France. He joined Tata Steel in 1990 and held several key leadership roles before moving to Vedanta Aluminium.
