RIMS first hospital in state to declare brain death, make organ donation possible

Ranchi: Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has become the first hospital in Jharkhand, where organ donation can now be done. After this the way for kidney transplant has been cleared. Also, work is being done on doing heart, pancreas and liver transplant in future.

For organ donation, the Health Department has given permission to RIMS to first declare the brain death of the patient and now organ transplant of the brain death patient can be done as per the rules.

Any organ transplant can be done only at the time of brain death. Before declaring a person brain death, it is confirmed on the basis of many types of tests. This test is done by a panel of four doctors within six hours.

Brain death can be declared by the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTO) of RIMS, for which a team of medical experts will be formed. RIMS Superintendent Dr. Hirendra Birua says that the condition of brain death is permanent and such a patient cannot be cured.

After the brain death of a patient is declared, the decision of organ donation is taken following discussions with the family, so that another needy person can get a new life.
It is known that RIMS had already demanded to constitute a medical team to declare brain death. There is a provision for declaration of brain death by the team of the Medical Board under sub-section-6 of Section-3 of the Human Organ Tissue Transplant Act (THOTA) 1994.

RIMS Medical Superintendent will be the chairman of this Medical Board. After the declaration of brain death, the potential organ donor will be identified through which organ donation can be found and through this organ transplantation can be promoted.
