Jamshedpur: Members of Cable Boys Club launched a cleanliness drive on the premises of Birla temple in Cable Town, Golmuri, on Saturday. Several workers and earthmovers were pressed into service to clean the old temple.

According to Anil Thakur, president of the Club, the first phase of reconstruction of the temple has started. The temple had long been lying abandoned as a result of which it has become a den of bats, he said.

Thakur said the local residents want the temple to be renovated so that it may again become a centre of devotion for the Hindus.

The Club general secretary Shiv Shankar Singh said the temple would have its own identity once it is renovated. He said the temple could be turned into a tourist hot spot.

The temple construction had started 20 years ago. But after closure of the Indian Cable Company, the construction work was stopped midway.
