Reel Stories, Real Lessons: Loyola School alumnus Sanjivan Lal illuminates minds with ‘Brexit 1947’

Jamshedpur, Oct 12: Loyola School, Jamshedpur, recently hosted an inspiring session with distinguished alumnus and filmmaker Sanjivan Lal, acclaimed director of Bubblegum (2010) and several notable documentaries such as The Bet and A Sleepless City. The event, organised for the students of the Dramatics Club, turned into a memorable afternoon filled with reflection, storytelling, and motivation.

Lal captivated the audience as he discussed his ambitious project, “Brexit 1947,” which he described as an exploration of post-colonial identity and the echoes of partition through his upcoming documentary The India Freedom. Drawing parallels between the historical and the contemporary, he urged students to understand how creative work can illuminate forgotten stories and shape cultural dialogue.

Sharing his journey from Loyola’s corridors to the world of cinema, Lal spoke candidly about the struggles of entering the film industry, emphasizing resilience, patience, and humility as cornerstones of success. He reminded students that confidence grows from curiosity and learning rather than accolades, and that setbacks are stepping stones toward growth.

Fondly recalling his days in Loyola’s Entertainment Club, Sahitya Parishad, and Dramatics Club, he credited these platforms for nurturing his love for storytelling and performance. The session concluded with engaging questions from students on creativity and filmmaking.

Principal Fr. Vinod Fernandes and Vice Principal Jayanti Sheshadri felicitated Lal with a memento and a sapling—symbols of growth and inspiration. His visit left the young Loyolites profoundly motivated, reaffirming that passion, humility, and perseverance can transform dreams into enduring legacies.
