Ratan Tata visited Steel City 26 times as Chairman of Tata Sons
Jamshedpur, Oct 10: Ratan Tata, the former Chairman of Tata Sons, visited Jamshedpur a total of 26 times during his tenure as the head of the Tata Group. His frequent visits to the city underscored his deep connection with Jamshedpur, the city founded by Tata Group’s visionary founder, Jamsetji Tata.
He last visited Jamshedpur in 2021 for the Founder’s Day celebrations. Although he was scheduled to return for the events on March 3 in the year 2023 and 2024, health concerns prevented his attendance.
Ratan Tata last visited Jamshedpur during the 182nd Founder’s Day celebration in March 2021. That year, the celebrations were subdued in view of COVID-19. However, the spirit to pay homage to the Founder was intact and there were few programmes, albeit with limited physical participation, organised to mark the occasion. The Founder`s Day celebrations at Jamshedpur Works was also live streamed for employees as well as for a select group of Jamshedpur citizens. On March 2, 2021, the Academy Building of Naval Tata Hockey Academy, GraphITI Centre – one of the world’s largest single site Graphene Production unit with a production capacity of 100 TPA – at the Indian Steel and Wire Products Limited, and Tata Steel Gateway Structure at Telephone Exchange Gate in Jamshedpur, were inaugurated by Ratan Tata and N Chandrasekaran in the presence of T V Narendran.
Under Ratan Tata’s leadership, the city saw significant growth and modernization, with various projects and developments that improved the infrastructure and quality of life for its residents.
His commitment to Jamshedpur remains a testament to his dedication to both the Tata legacy and the community.
Tata became chairman of Tata Sons in March 1991 and retired on December 28, 2012. Under his leadership, the Tata Group saw significant growth, with revenues skyrocketing from Rs 10,000 crore in 1991 to over US$100 billion by 2011-12.
