Ranji Trophy: Jharkhand under pressure as Andhra Pradesh moves close to first-innings lead

Jamshedpur, Nov 17: Jharkhand found themselves in a difficult position at the end of Day 2 of their Ranji Trophy Group A match against Andhra, as the visitors made a strong push to take the crucial first-innings lead. Despite posting a competitive 328 earlier in the day, Jharkhand bowlers struggled to defend the total, with Andhra reaching 224 for 2 at stumps at the Keenan Stadium here on Monday.

Andhra now require only 104 runs to surpass Jharkhand’s score, while still having eight wickets in hand — a situation that has left the hosts with plenty to worry about heading into Day 3.

Earlier in the morning, Jharkhand resumed their innings but could add only 69 runs before being bowled out. Overnight batter Sahil Raj, who showed promise, completed a fighting half-century (50 off 86 balls) but lacked lasting support from the tail. His dismissal ended Jharkhand’s innings at 328 in 112.3 overs.

The momentum soon shifted firmly in Andhra’s favour. Opener Abhishek Reddy played a determined and composed innings under pressure from the Jharkhand bowlers who have been in strong form this season, particularly pacers Sahil Raj and Rishi Raj. Showing great patience and skill, the 31-year-old scored his maiden first-class century — an unbeaten 103 off 156 balls, including 11 fours and a six.

Reddy formed two crucial partnerships that kept Andhra in control: a 94-run stand for the first wicket with India wicketkeeper-batter Srikar Bharat (51), followed by a 122-run partnership with Shaik Rasheed (58). Their solid approach helped Andhra push Jharkhand out of contention as the day progressed.

At the close of play, Reddy remained steady at the crease with young all-rounder Tripurana Vijay (6 not out), taking the visitors closer to a strong reply.

Earlier, Andhra’s KV Sasikanth (4/67) and left-arm spinner Saurab Kumar (4/77) bowled effectively to restrict Jharkhand from posting a bigger first-innings total.

With both teams eyeing vital points, Day 3 will decide whether Jharkhand can make a comeback or if Andhra will seize the advantage in this crucial fixture.
