Rain activity likely to intensify in Jharkhand from August 13

Jamshedpur: India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Ranchi Meteorological Centre has issued a weather alert for Jharkhand, warning of thundershower activity in isolated parts of the state over the next three days. The alert comes amid evolving monsoon conditions that are expected to gain strength in the coming days.

According to the IMD, the monsoon trough at mean sea level is currently positioned from Faridkot, Ludhiana, Najibabad, Shahjahanpur, Balia, and Jalpaiguri, before stretching east-northeast wards into Arunachal Pradesh. This positioning is conducive to localized thundershowers and rainfall activity across the eastern region.

Weather experts noted that an upper air cyclonic circulation persists over central Uttar Pradesh, extending up to 4.5 km above mean sea level and tilting southwards with height. This circulation, combined with the monsoon trough’s alignment, is likely to support the formation of a low-pressure area over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal around August 13. The system is expected to trigger an increase in rainfall activity across Jharkhand in the subsequent days.

Over the last 24 hours, monsoon conditions in Jharkhand remained largely normal, with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms recorded at several locations. Districts in both north and south Jharkhand experienced brief spells of rain, bringing temporary relief from the prevailing humidity.

Garhwa emerged as the wettest location in the state during this period, recording 61.5 mm of rainfall, while Seraikela reported the highest maximum temperature of 36.9°C. The variation in weather conditions across the state highlights the localized nature of monsoon showers at this stage of the season.

The IMD has advised farmers, local authorities, and residents in the affected districts to remain alert to changing weather patterns, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Sudden thunderstorms, accompanied by gusty winds and lightning, may also pose risks to outdoor activities and agricultural operations.

Meteorologists indicated that the approaching low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal could result in widespread rainfall across Jharkhand by mid-week, potentially replenishing water levels in reservoirs and benefiting kharif crops. However, they cautioned that excessive rainfall in a short period could also lead to waterlogging and localized flooding in urban areas.

With the monsoon season entering its active phase in eastern India, the coming days are likely to bring a mix of relief and challenges for Jharkhand’s residents, particularly those dependent on rain-fed agriculture. All eyes are now on the developing low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, which could play a decisive role in the state’s rainfall pattern for the remainder of August.
