South Eastern Railway Adopts New Protocol
Jamshedpur
In a significant move to prioritize passenger convenience, the South Eastern Railway (SER) has begun issuing “Line Block” orders and train cancellation notices two months in advance. This strategic shift aims to ensure that passengers are aware of service disruptions before the ticket booking window even opens, allowing them to plan alternative travel arrangements without financial or mental stress.
A Shift from Sudden Disruptions
Previously, sudden train cancellations due to maintenance or development work often left passengers stranded. Many were forced to either cancel their journeys entirely or opt for expensive last-minute bus or flight tickets. By announcing these blocks 60 days in advance, the Railways ensures that travelers can choose different trains or modes of transport right at the time of planning.
Focus on Infrastructure and Maintenance
The advance notice policy provides the Railway administration with a smoother window to execute critical infrastructure projects, including:
- Track and signal repairs.
- Electronic interlocking upgrades.
- General line maintenance and safety works.
However, the authorities clarified that this advance notice applies primarily to scheduled maintenance. In cases of sudden technical failures, accidents, or natural disasters, trains may still be cancelled on short notice.
Major Affected Routes (June – November)
Due to extensive line repair work in the Chakradharpur Division and Bilaspur Division, several key trains passing through Tatanagar will see scheduled cancellations between July 27 and November 12.
Prominent trains impacted on specific dates include:
- Tatanagar-Itwari Express
- Bilaspur Express
- Ara-Durg South Bihar Express
- Rishikesh-Puri Kalinga Utkal Express
The South Eastern Railway has already issued orders for these cancellations and route diversions to ensure the Howrah-Mumbai mainline remains efficient during the maintenance period.
Benefits to the Public
Officials stated that this proactive approach would significantly reduce the “economic loss and mental agony” associated with sudden cancellations. Passengers are advised to check the official railway websites and PRS counters for the specific dates of cancellation before booking their summer and autumn travel.
