Jamshedpur, Nov 17: A railway trackman employed with the Tatanagar railway section was crushed to death by the running engine at Tatanagar railway station on Sunday.
The victim, Chinmoy Mukherjee, 45, was working on the Up line track when the running locomotive of Tata Danapur Superfast ran into him killing him on the spot, at a distance of about 1 meter from the platform.
It is learnt that the deceased rail employee couldnt realize that the engine was coming on to the track he was working at and by the time he could run for rescue, on noticing the locomotive close to him, he was finished.
Perhaps he might have been in the impression that the engine would divert on the sidetrack (the accident site has a crisscross track network) but unfortunately the engine came running on the track he was working at, said a member staff of Tatanagar railway section, maintaining anonymity.
He was working at the Home signal (that gives permission for a train to enter or exit out of station premise) when the accident occurred. We have shifted the body to the (MGM) hospital for postmortem purpose, said Tata Government Railway Police station in-charge, Ramchandra Ram.
The movement of the goods and passenger trains on the Up and Down line onwards Purulia was affected for few hours owing to the demonstration by the Railway Mens Union members on the accident site demanding adequate ex-gratia compensation assurance from the senior railway authorities.
We will probe into the matter as to how such negligence (if any) has been done by the staff in the course of changing the face of the engine from one direction to other, said a senior rail official.
