Jamshedpur, June 1: Radheshyam Agarwal, renowned as the Father of Hindi journalism in Jamshedpur and the esteemed editor of Uditvani, breathed his last on Saturday morning, leaving behind an illustrious legacy spanning over four decades of fearless, lucid, and impartial journalism. Agarwal, the founding editor of Uditvani, played a pivotal role in nurturing Hindi journalism in the city, transforming it into a significant voice within the region.

The demise of Radheshyam Agarwal marks the end of an era, as he was instrumental in sowing the seeds of Hindi journalism in Jamshedpur and fostering its growth into a towering banyan tree of media excellence. At 83 years old, Agarwal passed away at Tata Main Hospital. His final rites were conducted at Shiv Ghat in Jugsalai.
Having resigned from his position as Assistant Commissioner of Sales Tax Department in Madhya Pradesh in 1980, Agarwal ventured into the realm of journalism and launched Jamshedpur’s first Hindi daily, Uditvani, on August 22, 1980. The inaugural ceremony was graced by the presence of then Chief Minister of Bihar, Dr. Jagannath Mishra.

Prior to his journalistic endeavors, Agarwal served as a professor in the Department of Economics at Ranchi University, showcasing his diverse talents and commitment to academia. Additionally, he served as the press secretary in the Shibu Soren government of Jharkhand in 2005, further exemplifying his dedication to public service.
Radheshyam Agarwal is survived by two sons and a daughter. His elder son, Udit Agarwal, remains associated with the publication of Uditvani and is actively engaged in initiatives aimed at improving the lives of marginalized communities through an organization called Young Indians. His younger son, Himanshu Agarwal, resides in America, while his daughter, Mukul Jain, a former journalist of NDTV News, resides in Dubai.

A multitude of journalists and dignitaries from the Marwari community, along with individuals associated with various political and social organizations including Health Minister Banna Gupta, MLA Saryu Roy, social worker Mukesh Mittal, Vijay Anand Moonka, Sandeep Murarka, Jawaharlal Sharma and several others paid their respects during his final journey, reflecting the profound impact of Radheshyam Agarwal’s contributions to journalism and society at large.

He reflected on his last meeting with Agarwal during a tour of Jamshedpur, noting the deep bond they shared since Agarwal launched Jamshedpur’s first Hindi daily, Uditwani, in 1980.

The Governor lauded Agarwal’s significant contributions to journalism in Jharkhand, stating that his legacy will be enduring. Expressing his deep condolences to Agarwal’s bereaved family, Das acknowledged the inevitability of death and the divine nature of life’s highs and lows. He prayed for peace for Agarwal’s soul and strength for his family during this difficult time. In a personal gesture, Das also reached out to Agarwal’s son to offer his condolences directly.

President Sudhanshu Ojha lamented his demise as a personal loss and an irreplaceable setback to journalism and society at large.
