Questions raised over Jamshedpur land being declared ‘Anabad Bihar Sarkar’

Jamshedpur: A land dispute in Kadma has taken a legal turn after Soumen Mahato alias Bapi, a resident of Uliyan, questioned the classification of a raiyati land on Anil Sur Path as “Anabad Bihar Sarkar” (government wasteland).
Addressing a press conference at his residence on Monday, Mahato alleged that the land, for which his family had regularly paid government land tax (khajna), was later declared government land and included in the Tata lease area.
The disputed property relates to Plot Nos. 1248 and 1231 (new Plot Nos. 66, 67, 68, 69 and 74) under Khata No. 1 (new Khata No. 1217). According to Mahato, survey records from 1907 describe the land as agricultural land, originally owned by raiyat Durga Charan Mahato.
He stated that his family purchased the land through two registered sale deeds executed in November and December 1970 from the son of the original landholder, and the property has remained in the family’s name since then.
Mahato claimed that despite being raiyati land, it was allegedly recorded as “Anabad Bihar Sarkar” due to an administrative error and later brought under the Tata lease area. He questioned how the land could have been registered, mutated, and taxed for years if it was government land.
The matter has now been challenged in court. The case is pending before the court of the Civil Judge (Senior Division-9), Jamshedpur, under Case No. 66/2022. The next hearing is scheduled for May 21, 2026.
Mahato also stated that Sandeep Gorai owns adjoining plots in the same area, including Plot Nos. 1217 and 1248 (new Plot Nos. 70 and 72). Gorai was present during the press conference.
