Jamshedpur: Protests broke out in Jugsalai on Saturday as residents and traders took to the streets to oppose the Jharkhand government’s decision to hike the holding tax by 20% across municipal bodies. Led by Sardar Shailendra Singh, President of the Jugsalai Municipal Council Rent Payers Association, hundreds of agitators gathered at the Municipal Council office to demand an immediate rollback of the “anti-people” tax.
Protestors Confront Municipal Officials
The protestors submitted formal memorandums to Vice Chairperson Archana Dubey, Executive Officer Sandeep Paswan, and attending councillors. In a unique gesture before the demonstration, the agitators presented shawls to the officials and public representatives as a mark of respect. A separate memorandum was filed for Chairperson Nausheen Khan in her absence.
The association strongly objected to the hike, labelling it “dictatorial oppression.” They argued that the government imposed the 20% increase without consulting newly elected representatives, placing an unbearable financial burden on middle-class families and small business owners already battling inflation.
Official Support and Legal Recourse
Vice Chairperson Archana Dubey expressed her solidarity with the public, revealing that she and several councillors had already petitioned Deputy Commissioner Rajiv Ranjan for legal intervention. Executive Officer Sandeep Paswan assured the crowd that he would formally convey the public’s grievances and objections to the state government.
Warning of Total Shutdown
Sardar Shailendra Singh issued a stern warning during the rally, stating that the association would enforce a complete shutdown of the Jugsalai market if the government failed to withdraw the hike.
The agitators plan to escalate the matter through the following steps:
- Political Pressure: Submitting memorandums to Chief Minister Hemant Soren and the Urban Development Minister.
- Legal Action: Filing a writ petition in the High Court following ongoing consultations with legal experts.
- Legislative Support: Approaching local MLAs to seek political backing against the tax burden.
