Promoting scientific temper among women, NASI organises workshop

Jamshedpur, Oct. 5 : In collaboration with National Metallurgical Laboratory ( NML), Jharkhand State Chapter of The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) organised a two-day workshop entitled �Science and Technology Sensitization Program for the Women leading towards Excellence in Science� from Thursday at NML�s Auditorium.

More than 300 women participants (research scholars/ faculty) from Jharkhand and other states are attending the workshop. Representatives from BIT, Mesra, Central University of Jharkhand, Ranchi University, Kolhan University, Jamshedpur Women�s College, Co-operative College, Graduate College, CSIR-NML, NIT Jamshedpur, SOA University (Bhubaneswar), are participating in it.

Chief Guest Prof. Manju Sharma, former Secretary of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, Prof. U.C. Srivastava, general secretary, NASI, India, Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Dr. Arvind Sinha and Dr. Niraj Kumar, Executive Secretary, NASI inaugurated the workshop.

Arvind Sinha, chairman, NASI Jharkhand Chapter said, we feel that a sustainable inclusive growth may be initiated and promoted by taking science and technology at the door step of common people. It may be achieved by not only showing them attractive inventions and facilities of science and technology available in the state, but create a spark in their minds that it is Science and Technology, which is their best friend to solve their day to day problems ranging from clean drinking water, sanitation, health, employment and entrepreneurship.

Prof Manju Sharma, in her speech elaborated on the mandate and objectives of NASI and its imperative need to align S&T to transform the society. She reminded the audience about the legacy of NASI and the role of various stalwarts affiliated to NASI in uplifting the status of S&T in India. She reiterated the recent GOI programmes on women empowerment, implementation of SWACCH BHARAT, and various programmes in sustainable technologies in food, healthcare, bioenergy, etc.

She encouraged participants in engaging with smaller innovations in bigger domain and with involvement of society. Prof. Sharma elucidated the role of CSIR-NML in S&T sensitization for metallurgy & material science in the state of Jharkhand.
