President Murmu at NIT Jamshedpur: “Viksit Bharat” Needs Dignity for the Poor, Not Just a Strong Economy

Jamshedpur: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday said that attaining top posts alone is not a true measure of success. Real success, she said, lies in whether one’s knowledge and work bring positive changes to people’s lives.

Addressing the convocation ceremony at NIT Jamshedpur in Adityapur, the President emphasized that the graduates would face many challenges after earning their degrees and must be prepared to confront them with determination.

Praising the institute, President Murmu said NIT Jamshedpur has produced engineers who have brought global recognition to the country. She lauded the efforts of the institute’s professors and alumni and congratulated all students receiving degrees at the ceremony.

Calling the occasion a moment of pride, the President said receiving a degree from such a prestigious institution is a matter of honor and celebration, achieved after years of hard work and perseverance. She also shared a light moment during the ceremony, noting that when she awarded gold medals to two students, there was no applause initially. She remarked that despite it being a joyous occasion, the audience appeared unusually quiet. When she pointed out that even female students—often said to be ahead of male students—were not clapping, the hall responded with loud applause.

The President urged students to express gratitude to their parents, guardians, and teachers, whose guidance helped them reach this milestone. She congratulated Swami Govind Dev Giri and Ravindra Kumar Behra, who were conferred honorary degrees.

She stressed that students should use their knowledge and skills in the national interest. Highlighting NIT’s efforts to link education and innovation with societal needs through its Centre for Innovation, the President said that while technology is advancing rapidly, it is also being misused, particularly in cyber fraud. She expressed hope that NIT would present effective solutions to curb the misuse of technology.

President Murmu called upon NIT graduates to act as nation builders and use technological progress as a tool for human welfare. She said institutional rankings should not be based solely on student placements or individual success, but on how much graduates contribute to national development.

Referring to government initiatives promoting startups and innovation, she said the dream of a developed India cannot be fulfilled merely through tall buildings or a strong economy. It will be realized only when people at the lowest rung of society have opportunities to live with dignity.

Earlier, Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar addressed the gathering, telling students that the day marked the beginning of new responsibilities. He remembered industrialist Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata, noting that he gave equal importance to education, healthcare, and human dignity along with industrial development. He also recalled Ratan Tata for taking these values to the global level. The Governor said NIT has produced technical experts who have made significant contributions to the country’s development.

The Governor observed that at most convocation ceremonies, female students receive more medals than male students, reflecting the leading role played by girls in education, particularly in Jharkhand. He said President Droupadi Murmu herself is an example of how someone from a modest background can rise to the highest constitutional post through hard work. He urged NIT students to uphold the values of Jamshedji Tata and NIT in their professional and personal conduct wherever they work.

At the 15th convocation ceremony, degrees were awarded to 1,114 students. Of these, 612 students received their certificates at the ceremony, including 417 undergraduate students, 149 postgraduate students, and 46 PhD scholars.
