Patna (IANS): Election strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor will make his electoral debut by contesting the upcoming by-election from Bihar’s Bankipur Assembly constituency. Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) Bihar State President Manoj Bharti announced the decision on Sunday, ending days of intense political speculation.
Kishor’s decision to contest from Bankipur directly challenges the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in an urban stronghold that the saffron party has held for nearly four decades.
The by-poll became necessary after the sitting MLA, current BJP National President Nitin Nabin, vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha.
Kishor Frames Bypoll as a “Referendum” for Bihar’s Future
Addressing members of the media, Prashant Kishor declared that the Jan Suraaj Party will approach the by-election with full conviction and vigour, positioning a potential victory as the foundation for an era of “alternative politics” in Bihar.
“For the past four years, Jan Suraaj has been my life, and for the next ten years, until the vision of change in Bihar is achieved, I have no other purpose,” Kishor stated. “I consider the responsibility of contesting the Bankipur by-election as a step towards that goal. Thousands and millions of people were connected with the ideas and efforts of Jan Suraaj in November 2025. After the results, many felt disappointed or discouraged. Most of them believe that if Jan Suraaj wins the Bankipur by-election, it will not only strengthen the movement but also help revive the vision of change in Bihar. I accept this responsibility with humility and thank all my colleagues, workers, and leaders.”
Kishor expressed deep gratitude to his party colleagues and leadership for placing their trust in him for this critical political battle.
Key Election Dates & Regional Repercussions
The Election Commission of India has finalized the schedule for the high-stakes by-election:
- Official Notification & Nominations Open: July 6
- Last Date for Filing Nominations: July 13
- Voting Day: July 30
- Declaration of Results: August 3
The Congress party has already voiced its support for backing Kishor in this contest. All eyes now turn to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) to see if the main opposition party will also throw its weight behind the Jan Suraaj founder in a unified bid to wrest the urban stronghold away from the BJP.
