Jamshedpur, Feb 29: The recent increase in electricity rates by 25 paise has imposed an additional burden of at least Rs 4.25 crore every month on the 8.5 lakh consumers in Jamshedpur including Kolhan. On average, consumers using 200 units of electricity will now face an extra charge of Rs 50. This hike may escalate during the summer season due to higher electricity consumption, further increasing the financial strain on consumers.
Currently, domestic consumers will be charged Rs 6.55 per unit instead of the previous rate of Rs 6.30 per unit. This increase also affects industrial and rural consumers, adding to the financial pressures already faced by consumers.
The announcement of a free electricity scheme for up to 125 units by the state government was recently made, benefiting 2.60 lakh consumers in Kolhan. However, the subsequent hike in electricity rates has come as a shock to consumers. Under the scheme, consumers will not be charged for consuming up to 125 units of electricity, but bills will apply for consumption exceeding this limit. Subsidies will be available for consumption between 126 to 400 units, with no subsidy offered for consumption exceeding 401 units, requiring consumers to pay the bill at the rate of Rs 6.55 per unit.
