Potka MLA demands ESI facility for contract labourers

Jamshedpur: During the budget session of the Assembly, Potka MLA Sanjib Sardar raised the pressing issue of medical facilities for contract labourers working in underground mines. He demanded the implementation of the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) scheme for hundreds of labourers employed in the uranium mines at Jadugora, Narwa, Turamdih, Bhatin, and Banduhudang in East Singhbhum district.

MLA Sardar pointed out that the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL), which operates these mines, does not provide essential ESI medical coverage to contract labourers, leaving them vulnerable to severe health risks due to the hazardous nature of their work. He emphasized the urgency of this matter, urging the state government to intervene and ensure health safety measures for these workers.

Highlighting the harsh working conditions faced by the labourers, Sardar stressed that access to ESI facilities is a basic right that must be provided to safeguard their well-being. He further stated that ensuring these medical benefits would not only improve health security but also boost morale and productivity among the workforce.

This demand from the Potka MLA has sparked hope among the contract labourers, who have long been struggling for adequate medical facilities. The labor community is now looking forward to the government’s response, anticipating a positive change in their healthcare rights.
