Low Oxygen Levels Behind Fish Deaths in Swarnarekha River

Jamshedpur: Following the death of a large number of fish in the Swarnarekha River, a team from the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board carried out an on-site inspection beneath Dobo Bridge and nearby stretches of the river on Monday. The step was undertaken under the directives of pollution control official Jitendra Singh.

Water Samples Collected from Multiple Points
A team led by Junior Environmental Engineer Anil Saxena collected water samples from two separate locations along the river during the afternoon. Officials noted that the condition of the river was alarming, with foul-smelling water resembling an open drain.

Low Dissolved Oxygen Levels Identified
Preliminary findings revealed that the Dissolved Oxygen (DO) level in the river had dropped below 4 mg/l, significantly lower than the normal range of 6–8 mg/l required to sustain aquatic life. Officials indicated that this sharp decline in oxygen levels is likely the primary cause behind the mass fish deaths.

Detailed Laboratory Analysis Underway
Anil Saxena stated that all collected samples would undergo comprehensive laboratory testing to determine additional contributing factors. Meanwhile, Jitendra Singh termed the oxygen deficiency a serious concern and assured that a thorough investigation is in progress. A detailed report is expected by Tuesday, following which corrective measures will be initiated to address the pollution issue.
