Jamshedpur, Aug. 7 : In a major breakthrough, city police arrested two persons for smuggling opium and marijuana at Deoghar under MGM police station area last evening.The two arrested persons were identified as Gautam Kumar (40) and Hyder Ali (32), both residents of Golmuri area of the city.
The police seized 150 kgs of marijuana and 250 gram of opium from two four-wheelers that the smugglers were using. This apart the police have also seized Rs 50,000 in cash from the possession of Gautam who is said to be a veteran smuggler.The cost of confiscated materials will be over Rs 2 lakh.
A team led by deputy superintendent of police (Headquarters-II) Kailash Karmali and OC, MGM police station Ashok Kumar nabbed the culprits.
Senior SP, AnoopBirtharay said that the consignment of the marijuana was loaded in a van where as the opium was being carried in a car in which both Gautam and Ali were travelling.
“Acting on a tip off we arrested the two from the NH-33 near Deoghar under MGM police station area. Later during investigation, the arrested persons confessed that they were carrying the consignment from a place in Tamar in Ranchi district to make its delivery somewhere at Kharagpur in West Bengal,” said Birtharay.
Addressing a press conference, the senior SP said it was an inter-state gang which has been busted following seizure of the marijuana and opium.
“The arrest is a major breakthrough for us. It is not the question about the cost involved, but these stuff causes the families to get disturbed due to intoxication. Both opium and marijuana, the sale of which is banned in the state causes to families disturbed if any member get addicted to it,” said the senior police officer.
