Police seize 150 kg marijuana worth Rs 12 lakh from a car

Jamshedpur, April 26: In a major breakthrough, the East Singhbhum district police seized a consignment of 150 kg of marijuana (ganja) after chasing a car on the Station Road under Bagbera police station area in the wee hours of Tuesday.

According to information, the cost of the seized marijuana is estimated to be Rs 12 lakh in the local market, while it will cost over Rs 1 crore in the international market.

Addressing a press meet, senior SP, Anoop T Mathew said that it is a major achievement for us. The police received a tip-off that white car carrying marijuana will pass from the Burmamines police station area towards the Tatanagar railway station.

“We came into action and set up a five member team headed by deputy superintendent of police (law and order) B N Singh for seizing the car.

The team members who were in separate police vehicles chased the car and ultimately overtook it at the Chaibasa bus stand under Bagbera police station area by chasing for about two km,” said Mathew.

Talking to the newsmen, the senior SP said that the car had no registration number plate. The driver had managed to flee leaving the car abandoned. He said on searching they found 20 bundles of marijuana loaded in the car, which the police team immediately seized.

Mathew said from the direction of the car they suspected that the consignment of marijuana was being smuggled to Odisha.

“We are trying to detect the registration number of the car. We have registered a case under Narcotic Drugs Preventive Act against unknown persons,” he informed.
