Police nab Al Qaeda link from Mango, bust terror network in city

Jamshedpur, Jan. 25: In a major success, the city police today raided the residence of one Raju alias Naseem Akhtar in Mango and arrested him on charges of keeping illegal weapons and his alleged links with terrorist groups.

According to a case lodged with the Azadnagar police station in Mango, acting on the confessions of another accused, Ahmad Masood Akram Sheikh alias Monu, a police team comprising officials and personnel from Mango, Bistupur, and Sonari police stations and DSP CCCR raided Akhtarís house at Zakirnagar, Old Purulia Road in Mango on Monday and recovered one country-made loaded pistol, a .315 mm bullet and a mobile phone.

Earlier, Sheikh had informed police that Akhtar had links with various terror and extremist groups and supplied them with weapons. The police have also arrested Sheikh, a resident of Dhatkidih under Bistupur police station area.

According to police, on January 22, a special team of Delhi Police informed the city police that Akhtar has links with Al Qaeda and was trying to develop a network for the terror organization in assistance with other youths in the steel city. On receipt of the information, the city police set up a team led by CCCR DSP Jasinta Karketta to take up the issue.

The Delhi Police further informed the city police that Akhtar had visited Saudi Arab in 2011 and on his return in 2013 met Abdul Shami, a resident of Dhatkidih who was arrested by the Delhi Police from Haryana for his alleged connections with Al Qaeda. Soon, the city police team arrested Sheikh and put him under thorough interrogation.

The police recovered a 9 mm pistol, five live cartridges of 9 mm pistol, a cell phone and some books and documents during the raid at Sheikhís Dhatkidih residence on January 22.

During his interrogation, Sheikh confessed that he was in touch with Nassem Akhtar, who supplied weapons to members of various terror groups in the region. Sheikh further said that he knew another person who had undergone terror training in Pakistan and returned to Jamshedpur with a view to undertake subversive activities. However, Sheikh did not name the person saying that he was only acquainted with the person by face.

The arrest of Sheikh alias Monu and Akhtar alias Raju are being considered major breakthrough by the police. Apprehensions are that these miscreants were up to some subversive activities in the region.

The city police team led by Karketta included Jitendra Kumar, officer in-charge Bistupur police station, Fulan Nath, officer in-charge Mango police station, Suman Anana, deputy officer in-charge Sonari police station, Anjani Kumar, officer in-charge Azadnagar police station, Surendra Kumar Malakar (Bistupur PS), Krishna Prasad Mandal (Bistupur PS), Md. Munir Khan (Bistupur PS), Dilip Kumar Yadav (Bistupur PS) and officials and personnel of other intelligence and security agencies.
