Ranchi, Sep 27: Police here intensified patrolling and combing operation against the banned People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI) rebels in Khunti after they killed three villagers and injured four others in the district on Monday.
Senior police officials along with their CRPF counterparts led the anti-Naxalite operation in Khunti. The incident took place at Raytodang village situated under Arki police station, which is around 65 km from Khunti district headquarters. Khunti is a stronghold of PLFI ultras.
Police officials inquired about the incident from villagers and tried to find out details about the appearance of the rebels and their whereabouts. They said they were trying to detect local links of the PLFI members.
According to the police, the militants belonging to PLFI fired indiscriminately on villagers, who had gathered for a Gram Sabha meeting late in the night.
The larger part of the crowd gathered at the meeting had left and only around 15 villagers were still in discussion, when PLFI ultras appeared and started firing on them.
Three people died on the spot while four were injured. The injured were rushed to Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Ranchi. Their condition was reportedly serious, police said.
Police sources say that the PLFI militants are frustrated with the villagers for regularly holding meetings against them. The killing was executed to create panic, they said.
The Maoists are active in 18 of the 24 districts in Jharkhand.
