Police arrest two for making extortion call to Jamshedpur businessman

Jamshedpur: Police on Friday arrested two persons who had given an extortion call after committing theft at a businessman’s house at Aambagan under Sakchi police station� area on July 29. The victim has a cloth shop in Sakchi.

The two arrested persons were identified as Ranjit Kumar (28) and Chandan Shao (26), both residents of Gwala Bustee at Bhuiyandih in Sidhgora.

Revealing about the breakthrough, senior SP, Anoop Birtharay said a burglary was committed at the house of Munna Agrawal at Aambagan on the night of July 23. The criminals had decamped with valuables, including electronic appliances and also a scooter by breaking open the house of Agrawal, leading him to lodge an FIR with the Sakchi police station  on July 24.

While the police were trying to detect the criminals involved in the burglary at Agrawal’s house, the victim had on July 30 informed the Sakchi police about a call made by some criminals demanding Rs 2 lakh as “rangdari.”

He said the caller had introduced himself one of those who had committed burglary at the victim’s house.  The caller had also threatened that they would kill some of the family members if their extortion call is ignored.

The senior SP said after the matter came to his notice he immediately provided a body-guard to Munna Agrawal and put the cell number from which the call had come to the technical cell of the district police.�

According to Birtharay, the technical cell got the tower location of the said number concerning the criminals at Babudih. “A police team was set up and rushed to Babudih in Sidhgora and nabbed a youth in whose name the cellphone used in making the extortion call was.� But the youth said his cellphone was stolen two days ago. But as the tower location was from Babudih, the police team made further efforts, considering that the thief must be somewhere in the neighbourhood.� Ultimately, Ranjit Kumar was immediately taken into custody.� Soon after another accused Chandan was also traced and arrested,” said Birtharay while talking to the newsmen.

The senior SP said that they not only recovered the stolen goods from and scooter the houses of the two arrested persons, they also recovered a stolen cellphone which they had used in making the extortion call.
