Sheikhpura youth builds mushroom business, employs local workers

Driven by a vision of self-reliance, Sanjeet Barnwal, a graduate from Sheikhpura, Bihar, has successfully built a thriving mushroom production enterprise with assistance from the Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme.
His inspiring journey marks a transition from a corporate job seeker in a metro city to an employer empowering local youth in his hometown.
After completing his higher education in Delhi, Sanjeet initially worked in the private sector for a year before returning to Sheikhpura to pursue local business prospects.
An early attempt at grain trading yielded limited returns, prompting him to explore other venues. His path shifted significantly when a visit to the District Industries Department introduced him to the PMFME scheme. Upon securing project approval and financial facilitation under the initiative, he established his dedicated mushroom cultivation and processing unit.
Today, Sanjeet’s business operates at a steady scale, supplying packaged fresh mushrooms across Sheikhpura and neighbouring districts, including Lakhisarai, Nawada, and Jamui, alongside markets in West Bengal.
Beyond securing his personal financial independence, the venture provides direct employment to nearly a dozen workers, generating sustained livelihoods in the region. Expressing his appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s self-reliance initiatives, Sanjeet highlighted that government schemes offer the crucial backing needed for young graduates to become job providers rather than job seekers.
He emphasized that determination combined with institutional credit support can inspire more youth to launch grassroots enterprises and actively tackle regional unemployment.
