Jamshedpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much-hyped fifth election rally in Chaibasa, held on November 4, turned out to be yet another misfire for the BJP in the recently concluded Assembly elections. Despite Modi’s fervent appeals and an emotive throwback to Chaibasa’s historical legacy as the “land of Ho fighters,” the BJP once again found itself nursing wounds in Kolhan.
The Tata College Ground, where Modi’s fiery speech unfolded, was meant to invigorate the BJP’s prospects in West Singhbhum’s five assembly seats, part of the 14-seat electoral battleground in this phase. Yet, despite the grandeur and gusto of Modi’s visit—complete with his now-iconic chaiwala anecdote—voters seemed unmoved. “He may be a chaiwala, but we didn’t order his brew,” quipped a local, summing up the region’s lukewarm response.
This rally, like the four before it, was a carefully orchestrated attempt to reverse the BJP’s fortunes in a region that has been an electoral black hole for the party since 2014. Modi’s charisma failed to prevent yet another drubbing, with Geeta Balmuchu, the BJP’s Chaibasa candidate, joining her compatriots in Jagannathpur, Majhgaon, Chakradharpur, and Manoharpur in tasting defeat.
Residents like Umesh Thakur and Pramod Singh, who reminisced about Modi’s rhetorical flourish in past rallies, seemed less dazzled this time. “It’s like watching a rerun of the same show—great dialogues, no plot twist,” said a sarcastic Thakur. Even Modi’s poetic musings on Chaibasa’s heritage couldn’t bridge the growing disconnect between the BJP’s glossy promises and voters’ ground realities.
As the ballots were counted, the verdict was unambiguous: Modi’s repeated visits might energize crowds, but they haven’t translated into wins. For now, Chaibasa remains a fortress the BJP can’t breach, no matter how many rallies are staged or chaiwala anecdotes are brewed.
