Auckland: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday invited New Zealand investors and business houses to partner with India across major economic growth sectors. Addressing a select group of CEOs and business leaders, PM Modi pitched massive opportunities in infrastructure development, civil aviation, logistics, clean energy, urban mobility, water management, waste management, and the digital economy.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon also attended the event, which spotlighted the expanding economic ties between the two democratic nations.
The Push for a $7 Billion Trade Target
Prime Minister Modi encouraged businesses from both nations to aggressively expand investment and commercial partnerships. He set a clear milestone: double bilateral trade to 7 billion New Zealand dollars (approximately ₹35,000 crore) by 2030.
To hit this target, PM Modi proposed a powerful merger of domestic strengths:
- Agri-Tech & Food Security: Combine New Zealand’s expertise in dairy science, horticulture, and forestry with India’s massive consumer market, food parks, and agri-tech talent to build global food value chains.
- Innovation Ecosystem: Foster closer ties between private sectors in both countries to collaborate on fintech, innovation, and emerging technologies.
FTA to Unlock Landmark Opportunities
During his address, PM Modi hailed the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as a landmark deal. He emphasized that the agreement will inject depth and dynamism into bilateral ties, creating new avenues for market access, investment, services, technology, and talent mobility.
“India and New Zealand are bound by shared democratic values, respect for the rule of law, diversity, and a common commitment to sustainable development,” PM Modi stated, describing these values as the foundation for an ambitious economic partnership.
An official statement highlighted the key drivers making India an attractive destination for New Zealand companies:
- Sustained high economic growth and political stability.
- A young, highly skilled workforce and an expanding middle class.
- A massive digital revolution and a next-generation infrastructure push.
PM Modi concluded by noting that India’s steady growth path firmly positions the country as a primary engine of global economic growth.
