NIT Jamshedpur Scraps B.Tech Branch Change Option

Jamshedpur: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur has abolished its “branch sliding” provision. The new rule strips B.Tech students of the ability to switch engineering streams after admission, regardless of how they perform in their first year.

An official notice from the Office of the Dean (Academic) confirmed that the restriction takes effect immediately and applies to all incoming undergraduate students starting this academic session.

Approved by the 51st Senate

The premier institute formally approved this landmark decision during its 51st Senate meeting. The mandate revokes all previous rules that allowed branch modifications under the B.Tech degree program.

How the Old System Worked:

  • Earlier, NIT Jamshedpur allowed high-performing students to upgrade their engineering branch at the end of their second semester.
  • Students with exemplary Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPA) routinely used this safety net to slide from core branches into highly coveted circuit branches, such as Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) or Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE).

Sudden Policy Shift Shakes Up JoSAA & CSAB Strategies

This sweeping change will heavily impact candidates participating in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) and Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) counselling rounds.

Many aspirants previously accepted less-preferred engineering branches at top-ranked institutes like NIT Jamshedpur, banking on their first-year academic performance to help them switch later. Under the new mandate, students must graduate in the stream they secure during initial counselling.

Experts Advise Absolute Caution During Choice-Filling

Education experts and counselling analysts warn that this policy change demands precision from students when locking in their college choices.

“Since there is no longer a safety net for branch upgrades at NIT Jamshedpur, students must be extremely meticulous and realistic about their choice of discipline during JoSAA choice-filling,” noted an admissions expert. “Entering a branch solely to get the institutional tag—hoping to slide out later—is no longer a viable option.”

With this decision, NIT Jamshedpur joins a growing list of top-tier technical institutions nationwide that are scrapping the branch change system. Administrators nationwide are pushing this change to reduce academic stress during the first year and maintain stable student-to-faculty ratios within each department.
