Ranchi, June 23: During his visit to the White House, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented special gifts to US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, representing different states of India. One of the notable gifts was Tasar silk cloth made in Jharkhand.

India is known for its four main types of silk: Mulberry, Eri, Muga, and Tasar silk. Among these, mulberry silk is considered the most expensive. However, Prime Minister Modi chose to honor Jharkhand and its tribal communities by gifting Tasar silk to America. Tasar silk production is primarily carried out by tribal and economically disadvantaged communities, and it has been an integral part of tribal culture for centuries.

Jharkhand is responsible for producing 50 percent of the country’s Tasar silk. Various regions such as Kharsawan, Kuchai, Amda, Chandil, Bhagaiya in Godda, Mandaro, Palamu, and Dumka specialize in large-scale production of Tasar silk clothing, including garments fit for royalty. The Tasar silk from these regions is highly regarded for its exceptional quality and vibrant appearance, with readymade cloth priced up to Rs 2000 per meter.

The significance of Tasar silk extends beyond its aesthetic appeal. It holds cultural and religious significance, as mentioned even in the Ramayana period. Wearing Tasar silk during worship is considered auspicious, and its brightness and durability make it a preferred choice. Tasar silk is also known for its unique properties—it resists insects, does not easily catch fire, and provides insulation during winters while offering a cooling effect in summers.

Jharkhand’s Tasar silk industry plays a crucial role in the state’s economy, providing employment opportunities to a significant number of people. The Central Tasar Research and Training Center, located in Ranchi, serves as the country’s sole institution dedicated to the research and development of Tasar silk. Students from the Northeastern states come to this center to study sericulture, highlighting its importance in promoting education and skill development. By gifting Tasar silk cloth, Prime Minister Modi not only showcased India’s rich cultural heritage but also highlighted the craftsmanship and contribution of Jharkhand’s tribal communities in the textile industry.

  1. Unfortunately, there is no marketing and awareness of Tasar silk in Jharkhand. Corporate should come forward to give good support to reach general public. A lot of brand items having no quality in the market.
Fine Tasar silk no doubt is a good potential. Saree and dhotis are more attractive 👍👍💐💐
