PM Modi Begins 2-Day Bengal Visit Today

Kolkata (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicks off a packed two-day visit to West Bengal this Saturday afternoon, featuring high-profile governance events, infrastructure launches, and state celebrations.

According to the itinerary released by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) West Bengal unit, the Prime Minister will touch down at the Indian Air Force (IAF) Kalaikunda airbase at 2:30 PM today.

Marking West Bengal Foundation Day

From Kalaikunda, a special helicopter will fly the Prime Minister to Tarakeswar in Hooghly district. There, he will attend a state government event marking ‘West Bengal Foundation Day.’

The newly formed BJP government, led by West Bengal’s ninth Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, recently designated June 20 as the permanent ‘West Bengal Foundation Day’ to honor its historical relevance. On this day in 1947, Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee moved the historic proposal in the state assembly to partition the province and integrate West Bengal into India.

This marks a significant policy shift from the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress administration, which celebrated Bengal Day on the fluid date of ‘Poila Boishakh’ (Bengali New Year). While Banerjee opposed the June 20 date due to the painful history of partition, the BJP administration maintains that the state’s foundation day must anchor itself to this definitive historical milestone.

During the Tarakeswar event, Prime Minister Modi will also unveil several crucial development projects for West Bengal.

Yoga Day and Naval Inaugurations on Sunday

Following the Hooghly events, the Prime Minister will return to Kolkata via helicopter to spend the night at Lok Bhavan (formerly Raj Bhavan).

On Sunday morning, PM Modi will hit Red Road in central Kolkata from 6:30 AM to 7:50 AM to lead the International Yoga Day celebrations.

He will then return briefly to Lok Bhavan before heading to Garden Reach on Kolkata’s southern outskirts. In Garden Reach, the Prime Minister will formally inaugurate three Indian-built naval warships.

Immediately after the naval event, a helicopter will transport PM Modi directly to Kolkata Airport, where a special flight awaits to take him back to New Delhi.
