Jamshedpur: As preparations intensify to shift MGM Hospital to Dimna, the plight of the PG female students has become a major concern. With no hostel facilities available and inadequate transportation options, these students are left worried about their safety and well-being.

Currently, PG female students work at MGM Hospital, but with the shift to Dimna, their commuting challenges will only grow. At present, many live in flats in Sakchi, though this arrangement is costly. After the move, the commute at late hours from Sakchi to Dimna, which is secluded and on the outskirts of the city, raises concerns about their safety, especially for those working night shifts.

Safety concerns and lack of hostel facilities
PG female students, including Dr. Sneha Sonali and Medhavita Singh, have expressed their fear about travelling late at night after the hospital’s relocation. Dimna, being at the edge of the city and not easily accessible, poses a significant security risk. With no hostel to accommodate these students, many are forced to seek costly rental options far from the hospital, which may become even less viable after the shift.

The recent incident involving a medical student in Kolkata has added to the growing fear among these students about their safety when traveling at night. Medhavita Singh, a second-year PG student and JDN joint secretary, highlighted the urgent need for proper accommodation and safety measures.

College and department’s response
The principal of MGM Medical College, Dr. Diwakar Hansda, acknowledged the concerns and stated that the safety of the students is a priority. While there have been talks about constructing a hostel for female students, no concrete steps have been taken yet. However, the department plans to take necessary measures to ensure their safety and intends to discuss the issue with senior officials.

In the interim, students like Medhavita Singh have suggested that temporary arrangements be made for accommodation until a hostel can be constructed. A letter will also be written to the relevant authorities, including the minister and principal secretary, to address this pressing issue.
