Pathalgari not acceptable in its current form: Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu

Governor visits TMH to see ailing Bagun Sumbrai, prays for ex-PM Vajpayee

Jamshedpur: Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu on Wednesday said the current form of the controversial tribal custom of pathalgari as being practiced in several places across the state was against the larger interest of tribals. She said pathalgari was an old tradition of tribal people and was not wrong.

But what is being practiced in the name of pathalgari today is not justified, she said.

The Governor made the observation during an interaction with scribes on her visit to Tata Main Hospital to meet former MP Bagun Sumbrai. She said she had convened a meeting at Raj Bhavan to discuss the pathalgari issue.

Around 700 Manki-Mundas, Parha Rajas and other traditional tribal leaders had come to attend the meeting. None of them wants any controversy. There are a handful of people who are trying to misguide them. But the tribal people are wise and desirous of development. They will understand what is right and what is wrong very soon, said the Governor.

Murmu said even the Adivasis were anxious over the current form of Pathalgari. She said the Adivasis wanted basic amenities and development.

Asked to comment on the recent starvation deaths in the state, the governor said only a proper inquiry could reveal the truth. The Governor further said that she had returned the Bill on amendments in land laws in the larger public interest.
After meeting the ailing ex-MP of Singhbhum, Murmu said he was stable and responding to treatment.

The Governor said she prayed for the speedy recovery of the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the former MP of Singhbhum.
