A Year of Grief: Families of Pahalgam Victims Seek Support and Justice

New Delhi: On the first anniversary of the brutal Pahalgam massacre, the families of the 26 victims gathered to honor their loved ones, describing the lingering trauma as an indelible scar. As India marks one year since Pakistan-based terrorists carried out the attack, the focus has shifted from the initial shock to the long-term struggle for the survival of the bereaved families.

The Human Cost of Heroism

The family of Adil Hussain Shah, the local pony operator who died while shielding tourists from gunfire, continues to grapple with the loss of their sole breadwinner. His brother, Nowshad, described the anniversary as a “black day” for the entire nation.

“Even today, our family feels deep sorrow and pain,” Nowshad said. “I tell my family to remember his good work. He earned martyrdom, which is a high honor, and we are grateful for the support we have received from the media across India.”

Calls for Government Action

For many, the pain of loss is compounded by administrative hurdles. Priyadarshini, widow of victim Prashant Kumar Satpathy, shared her ongoing struggle to secure her child’s future.

“I have already submitted the required documents for a job application,” she explained. “A government job suited to my qualifications would be life-changing. I am facing many difficulties as I try to keep my child’s education ongoing.” She also urged the government to tighten security at tourist hubs to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.

In Odisha, Sushanta Satpathy, Prashant’s elder brother, echoed these sentiments, calling on the state government to fulfill the specific commitments made to the family following the tragedy.

The Legacy of the Massacre

The attack, carried out on April 22, 2025, by The Resistance Front (an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba), remains one of the most chilling targeted killings in recent history. Terrorists singled out non-Muslim tourists after forcing them to recite religious verses, executing 26 people—many of them newly married—at close range in front of their relatives.

In the weeks following the massacre, the Indian armed forces executed Operation Sindoor, a strategic and measured strike against high-value terror bases in Pakistan and PoK. While the operation neutralized immediate threats and demonstrated India’s “zero-tolerance” policy, the families left behind in New Delhi, Odisha, and Kashmir remain the living testimony to the attack’s devastating reach.

Heightened Security in the Valley

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has placed Pahalgam under a heavy security blanket for the commemoration. Additional forces and increased surveillance are currently in place as political leaders and civil society members join the families to pay their respects.
