Outsider candidates derail BJP and Congress election strategies in East Singhbhum

Jamshedpur: In East Singhbhum, the decision to field external candidates in the assembly elections backfired for both the BJP and Congress, resulting in disappointing performances for both parties. The candidacies of Dr. Ajoy Kumar from Congress in Jamshedpur East, Meera Munda from BJP in Potka, and Babulal Soren from BJP in Ghatsila were met with resistance from local party workers, leading to significant internal strife and voter dissatisfaction. Furthermore, BJP’s decision to field Dineshanand Goswami in Baharagora also sparked discontent among local party members.

The discontent among party workers was evident during the election campaign. The controversy over ‘outsider vs insider’ candidates became especially pronounced when Dr. Ajoy Kumar, a Congress candidate from Jamshedpur East, entered the fray. The local workers feared sabotage and undermining of their influence due to the outsider candidate. This unrest erupted into chaos during a program at Michael John Auditorium in Bistupur, where Congress workers became furious at the presence of state president Keshav Mahato Kamlesh, leading to his abrupt departure from the event.

The election results clearly reflected the public’s rejection of outsider candidates, with both BJP and Congress suffering as a result. The parties’ failure to address local sentiments and include candidates with strong local connections alienated party workers and voters alike. In Potka, the decision to give a ticket to Meera Munda instead of the local leader Maneka Sardar only intensified the frustration, and the people of the area refused to accept an outsider representative. Similarly, Babulal Soren’s negative image in Ghatsila damaged the BJP’s chances in the constituency.

This internal discord within both parties highlighted a significant issue: when parties ignore the aspirations of local workers and opt for outsiders, they risk alienating their own base and losing crucial support. The poor performance in East Singhbhum serves as a wake-up call for both BJP and Congress, urging them to reconsider their strategies for future elections, taking into account the importance of local leadership and the sentiments of party workers.
