Mail News Service

Jamshedpur, Dec 10: People in Jamshedpur will heave a sigh of relief as the price of onions will climb down to Rs 70 per kilogram very soon. Krishi Utpadan Bazaar Samiti in Parsudih has received the first consignment of onions weighing one ton from Afghanistan via Punjab. These onions will be sold to retailers @ Rs 60 per kilogram and will be available in the markets @ rates between Rs 65 and Rs 70.

Naresh Kumar, a wholesaler at the Parsudih Bazaar Samiti said, These Afghani onions are being ordered directly by wholesalers in Punjab. We are purchasing the commodity from them. It takes between three to four days for the consignment to reach us from Punjab. We are doing this to curb the spiraling prices of onions which are selling between Rs 100 to Rs 120 in the city markets.

Naresh Kumar informed that more consignments of onions have been ordered and we are expecting them in the next couple of days. These Afghani onions are slightly different from the Indian ones. Each Afghani onion weighs between 100 to 400 grams. If the consumers like these onions we shall order more. In view of the market price of onions, we shall place more orders to ease the strain on consumers purses, Naresh stated.
