One killed, another injured in road mishap near Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, March 11: Amidst rising cases of fatal road mishaps, a 35-year-old man was killed on the spot and another man was injured as the bike they were riding was hit by a bus from behind along Nuagaon on Hata-Haldipokhar road.

The one killed was identified as Ravi Gope and the injured was identified as Jiten Bhagat.

The victims were on their way for regular purchases at Haat in Haldipokhar from their homes in the Gitilata area.

After causing the mishap, the bus driver tried to run away  by speeding the bus, but some passersby chased the vehicle and intercepted it about two km away. The people had handed over the driver after a thorough thrashing for rash driving in crowded spot.

Kowali police station OC, Ranjit Oraon who had reached the spot immediately rescued the victims and rushed them to MGM medical college hospital. The doctors on emergency duty declared Ravi Gope as brought dead.

It may be mentioned here that an adequate number of speed-breakers used to exist on the Hata-Haldipokhar road earlier, but during road-widening work done in the recent past, those speed-breakers were made non-existent.

The official said that they have identified a number points where the speed breakers are necessary to be set up.

He pointed out that though they have identified the points for setting up the rumblers, but they would go ahead with the move only after holding a meeting with the authority, the utility company which maintains the roads.

“We may decide what should be done for checking road mishap, but after all the Jusco is the owner of the road and we will set up the rumbllers or any other form of speed-dividers only after getting a nod from the utility company.  A meeting will be held with the officials of the utility company shortly, where all the traffic-related problems

have to be sorted out,” said the senior traffic police officer.

Traffic police have put up speed limit hoardings at sensitive zones. But the hoardings seem to have failed to meet the purpose. “Automated speed regulating system with provisions for hefty fine will check rash driving,” said a traffic police sub-inspector. The speed gun device can accurately record speed of a vehicle from a distance of 1.2km, thereby allowing traffic police to act against those offending the speed limit.

The number of road accidents in the city was showing a downward trend till recently. But with beginning of summer season cases of accidents have shot suddenly turning the roads into a virtual ‘death traps’.
