Nukkad Natak against drug abuse in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, July 22: Popular Nukkad Natak (street corner plays) group, Geeta Theatre has come with another hard-hitting social poser in the form of a crusade against substance abuse, ‘Nasha Karein Naash’ in pursuance of the government’s awareness campaign ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ (Drug-Free India Campaign). The play has been directed by Deputy Controller of Civil Defence, Piyush Sinha under directives of the SDO, Dhalbhum.

The play, organized by Civil Defence Jamshedpur, commenced from Chhayanagar in Bhuinadih. Geeta Theatre actors convey a powerful message about the destructive consequences of substance abuse on addicts and their families.

The plot revolves on how addiction can lead to the ruin of not only the addicts but also their families. The story depicts an affluent young man who, for his own gains, befriends a financially underprivileged boy and introduces him to substance abuse, further spiralling both of them into addiction. The anguish of the poor boy’s mother, who is distraught over her son’s plight, is brought to the forefront. The play takes a turn when a Civil Defence Inspector intervenes to enlighten them about the perils of addiction and the need for a drug-free society.

With powerful performances, the artistes convey a punch-loaded message to the audience that addiction is akin to disaster, capable of destroying even the most stable and loving families. The play concludes with all the actors taking an oath to stay away from substance abuse and urging others to do the same.

The performance was attended by officials from Civil Defence including Suresh Prasad, Divisional Warden Balwant Singh and volunteers Nagendra Kumar, Uttam Chakraborty and Taher Hussain from Hind IIT.

The young talents of Geeta Theatre, including Geeta Kumari, who played the role of the distressed mother, Tushar Karan as the affluent young man, Abhiranjan Kumar as the underprivileged boy and Prem Dixit as the Civil Defence Officer, delivered highly laudable performances. The Nukkad Natak successfully highlights the urgency to combat substance abuse, urging everyone to contribute to a drug-free and healthy India. It serves as a powerful reminder that the responsibility to build a better society begins with each individual’s choice to say ‘no to drugs.
