NTHA cadet Ashish Tani Purti to represent India in Hockey 5s event in Oman

Jamshedpur/Ranchi, July 15: In a proud moment for Jharkhand’s sports ecosystem, Ashish Tani Purti, a cadet of the Naval Tata Hockey Academy (NTHA), has been officially selected to represent the nation at the upcoming Men’s Youth Hockey 5s Asia Championship in Muscat, Oman.

This selection marks Ashish’s second major international tour wearing the India blues, following his exceptional contribution to India’s historic gold medal triumph at the U-18 Asia Cup in Kakamigahara, Japan. Additionally, he is the only player in the boy’s squad to be selected from the state of Jharkhand for this tour to the gulf.

Ashish’s voyage to Muscat was earned through a gruelling, high-intensity national preparatory camp held at Punjab University. The selection committee faced the intense task of pruning a highly competitive pool of 15 elite prospects down to a lean, hyper-focused 10-member squad tailored for the relentlessly fast-paced Hockey 5s format.

Out of the final 10-man roster, the coaching staff opted for extreme tactical agility, selecting only two specialized defenders to anchor the Indian backline. Ashish triumphantly claimed one of these two coveted spots.

Ashish’s spectacular rise emphasises on the monumental impact of the Hockey Ace Foundation (HAF), a joint, visionary initiative conceptualized by Tata Steel and Tata Trusts in 2017. Established to revitalize hockey at a high-performance level mainly within the tribal belts of Jharkhand, the foundation operates the Naval Tata Hockey Academy (NTHA) as a premier incubator for elite athletic talent.

By combining FIH-standard infrastructure with international coaching, dedicated nutritionists, and advanced sports science technology, the collaborative efforts of Tata Steel and Tata Trusts are successfully empowering young, raw talents to leap directly from rural training grounds onto the global centre stage.
