Noted Urdu poet and former principal of Karim City Manzar Shahab expires

Jamshedpur , Sept. 8: Noted Urdu poet and former principal of Karim City College, Manzar Shahab passed away on Thursday morning.

He was 89 years old and was suffering from long ailment. The poet was put to rest at Zakir Nagar graveyard in Mango.

Senior officials of Karim City College and people from literary circle present were present in his last journey. Rich tributes were paid on his last journey.

Shahab wrote several books that are still appreciated among Urdu readers. His two collections of prose, Intekhab-E-Nasar and Meer Taqui Meer, was published in 1956 and 1968, latter Manzer came up with his first book of poetry Pairahan-E-Jan in 1989.

Two years ago, from another book of prose, Aur Phir Bayan Apna, two of his essays, Vidyapati and Maithili Ke Lok Geet ,found appreciation in international circles.

Recollecting his association with Shahab, SRA Rizwi Chabban, president of literary society Anjum Taraqqi Urdu-e- Hind, said that the Shahab was a noted figure in literary circle. His death has created a void that can never be filled up.

Chabban informed that Shahab started writing in 1947, the year after his village, Shaho-Bigha (Gaya), fell to communal holocaust. From there on, from the early days of his student life to his professional years, when he joined the Co-operative College as a professor to the time when he joined, and later retired, as the principal of Karim City College, Manzer has never stopped writing.

His writings won honours from the Progressive Writers’ Association, West Bengal Urdu Academy, Singhbhum Hindi Sahitya Sammelan and Shae-Queen-E-Adab. His poetry on war Ek Raat was translated into Czech, Russian, English and Bengali.
