The Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board has issued show-cause notices to 12 major institutions in Jamshedpur for violating pollution control norms.
The notices target major entities like Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Main Hospital, and Hotel South Park over excessive diesel generator emissions.
The board issued these directives following an inquiry initiated by the Jharkhand Human Rights Conference using Right to Information disclosures.
Smoke from diesel generators releases fine particulate matter and harmful nitrogen oxides during power outages.
Officials have ordered all targeted institutions to install Retrofit Emission Control Devices on their generators within 180 days.
Entities must adopt approved emission-reduction technologies within this six-month deadline to curb regional air pollution.
The state board warned that non-compliance will attract severe financial penalties upon the expiration of the notice period.
Defaulting institutions will face daily environmental compensation fines ranging from ₹7,500 to ₹25,000 depending on generator capacity.
Authorities will strictly calculate these daily fines based on the severity of the violation and total equipment capacity.
The regulatory body expects swift compliance from these prominent commercial, industrial, and medical establishments across the city.
