Jamshedpur, June26: The Calcutta Samaritans-Jamshedpur with support from Jharkhand State AIDS Control Society and in association with Tata Steel organized a program to observe 26 June as the “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking”.
The Chief Guest for the event held at Drop-in-Centre premises at Brahmani Road, Baridih was G. M. Sharan, Head, Urban services, CSR, Tata Steel. Addressing the gathering G.M Sharan gave a clear picture of how one gets addicted to drugs and alcohol and how to keep one away from the clutch of addiction.
He indicated that The Calcutta Samaritans is the only one of its kinds in the state of Jharkhand in terms of providing treatment cum rehabilitation for people afflicted by the disease of drug addiction and has been running the show for more than three decades throughout India.
Administrator, Mr. A. Rajan narrated the importance of the event and the made aware of the services provided by The Calcutta Samaritans, associated with Urban Services, CSR, and Tata Steel to the people affected by the addiction of drugs and alcohol.
He also reflected the avail of the OPD for the injecting drug users which is funded by Jharkhand state AIDS Control Society, Kanchan Kumar, Programme Manager of The Calcutta Samaritans-Jamshedpur said that the main aim was to raise awareness on the issue of abuse of illicit drugs and its effects on the society.
No individual, family or community is safe where illicit drugs take control. The Calcutta Samaritans recognizes the importance of the community as the key stakeholder and establishes partnership with general mass and the civil society representatives to inspire people and mobilize support for a community free of drugs.
Earlier the programme started with the welcome note of the Project Manager, Kanchan Kumar. It consisted of series of events like drawing competition by the clients who are undergoing treatment, testimonies of the recovering drug users, prize distribution of the drawing competition.
Also present at the event were Prof. Dr. Subhashis Sirkar from MGM Collaee & Hospital, Ramadri Sengupta Project Director-De-addiction Centre, Kolkata and Kundan Bhattacharya Finance Manager from The Calcutta Samaritans Kolkata.
The invitees were mainly from the health sector, corporate houses, Academic scholars, students from different Schools such as Kerala Public School-Kadma, Baridih High school, AIWC Academy of excellence-Baridih and NGOs working in the related field and other specialized healthcare providers.
The United Nations General Assembly, in the year 1987, decided to observe 26 June as the “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking” as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and co-operation to achieve an international society free of drug abuse.
Every year a theme is selected to mark the occasion. This year the theme is “LET’S DEVELOP OUR LIVES OUR COMMUNITIES OUR IDENTITIES WITHOUT DRUGS”.
