No further room for Tata Steel’s expansion in Jamshedpur: CEO and MD TV Narendran

SCCI meet: ‘MSMEs are backbone of Tata Steel, should ensure quality of production’

Jamshedpur, Feb 6: Jamshedpur, Feb 6: Tata Steel’s Global CEO and MD TV Narendran on Tuesday outlined the challenges in the global steel market, with China leading in production, and stressed the need for Tata Steel to focus on maintaining a balance and delivering value to shareholders.

 “India’s emergence as a key player in the world economy and the rapid growth in the country’s basic infrastructure in recent years, are contributing to the increased steel supply by Tata Steel,” he averred.

Addressing a programme organized at Chamber Bhawan by Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), chief guest, TV Narendran emphasized the strengthening ties between Tata Steel and the SCCI, highlighting the crucial role of industrial development.

He acknowledged the significant contributions made by the workforce in Jamshedpur, emphasizing Tata Steel’s position as a multi-generation company. Narendran credited the strong relationship between Tata Workers’ Union and Tata Steel for the company’s progress.

Speaking on Tata Steel’s unique position in Jamshedpur, TV Narendran acknowledged the challenges faced by large companies, emphasizing the importance of maintaining quality and competitiveness. He said, “MSMEs are the backbone of big companies and it is on their quality products that such big companies rely. Tata Steel is a big company. Jamshedpur occupies an important status in the MSME coverage area. As such MSMEs should keep a close watch and ensure quality production.”

Narendran stated that Tata Steel was the only company of its kind in the world where the plant were situated in the centre of the city. He said, “Considering the population, we cannot expand much further in Jamshedpur. Thus, for expanding production, we are looking for conducive places beyond Jamshedpur,  like, we are concentrating on our Kalinganagar plant that is playing a crucial role in expansion.”

In his address, Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President of Corporate Services, expressed gratitude to the Chamber for its valuable suggestions over time. He emphasized the role of the Chamber and its officials in facilitating Tata Steel’s involvement in the development of Jamshedpur.

Chaudhary, while highlighting Tata Main Hospital’s significant capacity with approximately 1,000 beds, and the upcoming addition of two new buildings, mentioned, “Collaborations with specialist doctors and tie-ups with other multi-specialty hospitals to enhance medical facilities for patients are in process.”

In addition, he said that discussions were on with the state government and airport authorities to develop the airport at Dhalbhumgarh.

Earlier, businesspersons and entrepreneurs from the region, in their addresses, focussed on Tata Steel’s global perspective and the participation of local businesses in the development of the company.

SCCI’s Honorary Secretary, Manav Kedia welcomed the guests present on the occasion while President Vijay Anand Moonka felicitated Tata Steel’s CEO Narendran with various honors in the course of his inaugural address.

The program concluded with members raising concerns about Tata Centenary Mall and Jugsalai Foot overbridge. SCCI Vice President and Advocate Rajeev Agrawal offered the vote of thanks.
