Local Youths Clash with NIT Jamshedpur Students at Food Stall

Protests Erupt Over Campus Safety

Jamshedpur: A violent clash between students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur and local youths on Sunday evening triggered high tension in the Adityapur area. The incident occurred on Asangi Road, threatening student safety near the campus gates.

The Confrontation

The altercation began around 7:00 PM near the Down Hostel while a group of students ate at a roadside food stall. Witnesses report that a minor dispute with youths from nearby Asangi village quickly escalated into a physical fight. The local youths allegedly attacked the students, sparking a fierce scuffle. The attackers fled the scene only after a larger group of students arrived to support their peers.

Students Demand Security

The attack sparked widespread outrage, drawing dozens of students out of their hostels in protest. The agitating students highlighted a pattern of harassment, alleging:

  • Recurring abuse: Outsiders frequently harass and verbally abuse students on Asangi Road.

  • Administrative Lapses: Students labeled the lack of security near the institute gate a serious failure.

  • Demands for Action: The protesters demanded the permanent deployment of security personnel along sensitive routes and the immediate arrest of the attackers.

Police and Administrative Response

Upon arriving at the scene, RIT Police Station In-charge Sanjeev Kumar and his team faced a crowd of determined students. After prolonged discussions, the police eventually pacified the group by promising strict legal action.

The administration has initiated the following steps:

  1. Evidence Gathering: Officials are currently examining CCTV footage to identify the local youths involved.

  2. Increased Presence: Police have intensified patrolling and deployed additional forces near the Down Hostel and surrounding sensitive areas.

  3. Institutional Appeal: The NIT administration appealed for peace while promising to coordinate with district authorities to bolster campus security.

While the situation remains under control, the police have not yet received a formal written complaint.
