NIT Jamshedpur student dies after falling from apartment building

Jamshedpur: A wave of shock and sorrow swept across the Adityapur locality on Friday evening after a 20-year-old student, Devanshu Gandhi, died in a tragic fall from the fifth floor of Dream Apartment, located under the RIT police station limits. The incident occurred just hours after the young student had appeared for his final examination at NIT Jamshedpur, where he was pursuing Computer Science Engineering.

Originally a resident of Hatia, Ranchi, Devanshu had been staying at the Dream Apartment for the past one and a half months. According to preliminary reports, he had returned home after finishing his exam and later went to the fifth-floor corridor of the building. It was there that he reportedly slipped and fell, plunging several stories to the ground.

Eyewitnesses and fellow residents immediately rushed to his aid, and he was transported in critical condition to Tata Main Hospital (TMH). Despite efforts by emergency responders, the doctors at TMH declared him dead.

Speaking to police and media, family members of Devanshu disclosed that he had been under treatment for mental health issues in Ranchi prior to shifting to Jamshedpur. He was the eldest of two siblings, and described as a bright student with a quiet demeanor. Friends and college peers expressed deep grief, with some struggling to come to terms with the loss, especially as it happened on the very day of their course completion.

Following the incident, officials from RIT Police Station promptly arrived at the scene. The body was taken into custody and sent for postmortem examination on Saturday morning to determine the exact cause of death and rule out any foul play. A detailed investigation is currently underway.

Police sources have indicated that they are reviewing CCTV footage, recording statements from residents, and will also consult with Devanshu’s family and NIT authorities as part of the probe.

The tragic death of a student on the very day of the final exam has cast a pall over the NIT Jamshedpur campus, where many students are still reeling from the news. A condolence meet is expected to be organized by the institute once the investigation is complete and official updates are shared with the administration.

This heartbreaking incident has also brought renewed attention to the mental health challenges faced by students, particularly in high-pressure academic environments like engineering colleges. While Devanshu’s case is still under investigation, his prior treatment history has highlighted the urgent need for better mental health support systems on campuses.
