NIT Jamshedpur should rank in top 50: Director Dr Gautam Sutradhar

Aims to enhance infrastructure and elevate quality of education

Jamshedpur, May 15: The newly appointed director of the prestigious National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur, Dr Gautam Sutradhar has outlined ambitious plans to prioritize the improvement of infrastructure and the enhancement of the quality of education at the esteemed institution. While interacting with the media on Monday, he expressed his vision and determination to propel the NIT to greater heights.

He said that NIT Jamshedpur is the only NIT which is situated in the middle of an industrial hub.  According to him, the ranking is not satisfactory. The ranking of the institute is 90 whereas its ranking should be within top 50.

He will try to make NIT Jamshedpur within top 50 within the next five years. There are many parameters to set ranking and it will take some time for us to understand which parameters the institute has not been able to live up to.

The director said: “At present, about seventy percent of the students live in the hostel and the rest outside because the work on the infrastructure of the new hostels is still going on. After the completion of the work, 100% of the hostel will be available for the students. Soon two new hostels will be ready, in which there will be accommodation for 1000 boys and 300 girls. In the coming time, PhD students will also get hostel facilities. Hostels will also be arranged for married students in years”.

Dr Sutradhar said that there is no auditorium for the students in the institute campus and getting it built is one of his priorities. He said that there are two types of infrastructure in any institute. The first is hard and the second is soft. Buildings, hostels, etc. are hard infrastructure and they will try to provide whatever deficiencies or non-availability there are, as well as efforts to improve on important issues like number of faculty, research work under soft infrastructure. At present there are 180 faculty in the institute while the sanctioned posts are 246. He said that the ranking of the institute is also decided on the number of men and women on the posts of deans and there is definitely a need to improve this parameter.

He stressed the significance of investing in cutting-edge research facilities to foster innovation and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty and students. The goal is to establish the NIT as a leading research institution that contributes to scientific advancements and technological breakthroughs.

Recognizing the institute’s stellar reputation, the director expressed their commitment to maintaining the highest standards of teaching and learning. He outlined plans to revamp the curriculum to align it with industry demands, promote industry-academia partnerships to facilitate internships and placements, and encourage faculty development programs to ensure a competent and well-rounded teaching staff.
