Jamshedpur: To boost sustainable civil engineering research and infrastructure innovation, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur inaugurated the “Sustainable Geotechnics Laboratory” (SG Lab) on Thursday. The inauguration took place during the opening day of NIT Jamshedpur’s three-day ANRF-supported International Conference on Sustainable Practices and Materials in Civil Engineering (SPMCE 2026).
Several distinguished academicians and industry leaders attended the inauguration ceremony, including the Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) Gopal Pathak (Director General of Sarala Birla University), Chief Patron and Director of NIT Jamshedpur Prof. Goutam Sutradhar, Atul Kumar Bhatnagar (Managing Director of Tata Steel UISL), and Prabhakar Singh (Founder and Chancellor of Sona Devi University).
The institute developed the SG Lab as a specialized research and testing facility dedicated to environmentally sustainable solutions in geotechnical engineering. The laboratory will focus on advanced studies related to soil, rocks, foundations, slopes, embankments, tunnels, and ground stability. Through these focus areas, the lab aims to create safer, stronger, and eco-friendly infrastructure systems while reducing the environmental impact of conventional construction techniques.
Officials of the Civil Engineering Department stated that the new facility will significantly strengthen research capabilities in sustainable infrastructure development, climate-resilient engineering, waste utilization technologies, and green construction materials. The laboratory will provide students, researchers, and industry experts with modern testing and analytical facilities to promote innovation in sustainable civil engineering practices.
Earlier in the day, the Department of Civil Engineering formally commenced the three-day International Conference on Sustainable Practices and Materials in Civil Engineering (SPMCE 2026). The department is hosting the event in a hybrid mode, drawing participation from researchers and experts across India and abroad. The conference aims to address the global challenge of developing resilient and zero-waste infrastructure without accelerating environmental degradation.
Delivering the welcome address, Organizing Secretary Dr. Subhadeep Metya informed the audience that the maiden edition of the conference received an overwhelming international response. He noted that after a rigorous double-blind peer-review process and a competitive acceptance rate of 37 percent, the committee selected 232 research papers for presentation across 21 parallel technical sessions.
Head of the Department Dr. Prahlad Prasad highlighted the department’s recent achievements, advanced testing frameworks, and ongoing research initiatives at NIT Jamshedpur. During the programme, the distinguished guests on the dais jointly unveiled the official SPMCE 2026 Conference Souvenir.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Prof. (Dr.) Gopal Pathak emphasized the importance of eco-friendly binders and smart material optimization in future infrastructure projects. In his presidential address, NIT Jamshedpur Director Prof. Goutam Sutradhar reiterated the institute’s commitment to translating high-impact engineering research into practical industrial and societal applications.
