Jamshedpur: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) ramped up its efforts against terrorism, left-wing extremism, and organized crime in 2024, making significant strides in maintaining national security. In a year marked by decisive action, the agency arrested 210 accused across 80 cases and recovered a vast arsenal of illegal arms and explosives from states like Ranchi, Patna, Jammu, Jaipur, and Chandigarh.
A senior NIA official stated, “Our actions reflect our commitment to counter anti-national forces. The recovery of weapons and arrests of key individuals have dealt a significant blow to organized crime and extremism.”
Focus on Left-wing extremism
Left-wing extremism was a major focus of the NIA’s investigations, accounting for 69% of the arrests in 2024. These efforts have been pivotal in countering attempts to destabilize peace in various regions. Among the recovered items were two hand grenades, 34 pistol rounds, one Chinese pistol, one Turkish pistol, 20 Chinese pistol rounds, and a pistol silencer. In addition, the agency seized five rifles, six pistols, one revolver, 215 rounds of ammunition, five detonators, two packets of gunpowder, 75 empty cartridges, and 75 kg of suspected explosives.
Expanding Capabilities
In its mission to strengthen investigative and enforcement capabilities, the NIA conducted 11 training programs, enhancing the skills of 1,678 state police officers. Recognizing the increasing threat of terrorism and organized crime, the agency also established two new special NIA courts in Jammu and Ranchi.
Commenting on these developments, an official remarked, “The creation of new NIA courts and officer training programs are critical steps towards streamlining investigations and ensuring timely justice.”
Actions Against Gangsters and Khalistani Networks
In 2024, the NIA intensified its crackdown on gangster-related activities and Khalistani terror networks. The agency arrested 14 individuals linked to Khalistani operatives abroad and conducted 101 searches in related cases. Additionally, raids were carried out at 662 locations, leading to 13 arrests in gangster-related investigations in Ranchi and other cities.
The NIA’s comprehensive approach, from conducting extensive raids to recovering illegal arms and training law enforcement personnel, has reaffirmed its role as a frontline agency against threats to India’s internal security. Its sustained efforts in 2024 have laid the groundwork for a more secure and stable nation.
